Grumbles from last year

JULY 9, 2006

It has been exactly ONE year since Neil Gaiman graced our shores. And it has also been one year since I feel like kicking myself for not going, though I battled more than hell and high water in trying to organize everyone else's stubbornly uncompatible schedules to make room for mine.

Ah, the side effects of being in my mid-teens; you get to do things, but not exactly the kind you want.
---

I watched Notting Hill last night partly out of boredom, partly because I wanted to see Hugh Grant. The movie was flat and slow and sleepy. The start spelled it out right from the beginning, with the slow opening song "She", and Hugh Grant's stuttering narration. I know he's portraying the shy guy, but he never gets anywhere else-- maybe a toe in this direction, and a finger in that, but it's the same expression and delivery all throughout.

As for the script-- it had potential, but lacked the great line delivery and wit to catch anyone's attention.

It was disappointing, more so because you've got Julia Roberts in there too. The only interesting character there was Hugh Grant's nutty German flatmate, who reminded me of Dirk Nowitzki-- do most Germans look like they're yetis? Hmmm...

If there's one good thing(?) though, it's that the movie made me realize that Brits (or Europeans, for that matter) are the most peculiar people I've encountered on television. You never know quite what to expect from them. They're strange and fascinating and magical, in the most wonderfully oddish ways possible that leave you disgruntled in the morning. Maybe that's why they have leprechauns and other little green men at the other side of the rainbow...

Speaking of Europeans, I glimpsed a little of the FIFA World Cup a while ago: Germany versus Portugal. GO GERMANY! *huggles Germany* I think the country's great, that's all; it's not really about the team. (The last time I looked, they already scored 2, by the way. :D) Aaaah, the World Cup. The olympic-size soccer field looked so sproingy with the green green grass.

Grass. I love grass. Especially when it's green and tufty wufty.

I also like watching sports, but not being the participant.

Hehe, and I made it a point to know at least ONE player from any of the teams. And it's... DECO! Deco, #20, Portugal(!!!), who in my opinion, resembles the vocalist of Hoobastank, in certain angles.
